‘For the young and with the young’. Apply for the hackathon by 12 March

Submit your team to participate in the second Active Citizens Fund – Regional Programme’s hackathon by 12 March. During the event, you will be working on the problem you would like to solve, receive the support from our experts and have the chance to win prizes worth up to PLN 8,000.

The second hackathon, named ‘For the young and with the young’ will take place on 12-13 April in Krakow (Regional Public Library, 1 Rajska St.) and will focus on topics related to working with and for young people. We will address the challenges faced by your local community or organisation and look for solutions that engage young people and fulfill their potential.

The Civis Polonus Foundation is a content-related partner of the event.

Who are invited?

We are inviting people for whom the young are important. If your organisation is already working with or for young people, this event is for you! If you want to involve young people in your activities more than before or just to start cooperating with this group – you are also welcome!

Teams applying for the hackathon can also include minors, provided that a parent, or a legal guardian has given their consent (download here the consent template).

Why a hackathon?

A hackathon is a special and very interesting meeting format. During the event, your time to work will be limited. You will have only (and as much as) 12 hours, but also the comfort of concentrating one hundred percent of your attention on finding solutions. Both of these features of the hackathon are good fuel for creativity.

The hackathon will be concluded with presentations of the solutions. The best ones will be selected by the votes of those attending and the experts advising you during the event. The selected solutions will be awarded (with three financial prizes of a total value of PLN 8,000).

Regardless of the prizes, each team will finish the hackathon with a ready-to-implement idea, which will be consulted with experts and participants.

Introductory meetings

Before the hackathon, we invite you to join two introductory webinars (open to all interested parties):

  1. 20-03-2024, 10:00-11:00 – How to support young people who want to be active?
  2. 28-03-2024, 09:00-10:00 – How to research the needs and identify the potential of young people?

We also encourage you to watch the recordings of three webinars on service design methodologies and tools, which are available in our ‘Library’. You will learn how to design services – proposals for activities that are attractive to the audience and that can become the basis for new projects. During the hackathon, you will put this knowledge into practice!

In addition, about a week before the hackathon, the teams selected to take part in the event will be invited to an hour-long organisational meeting, during which we will tell you how to prepare for the event in terms of content and logistics.

What will happen during the hackathon?

The hackathon will start at noon on 12 April and end on 13 April in the afternoon (at 16:00). The event will consist of several parts. We will start by defining needs and value propositions so that we can generate ideas for solutions, knowing the perspective of your audience. A special session will be dedicated to preparing the presentation of the solution and presenting its main ideas.

Each part will be preceded by a short introduction and instructions. During and between the following sessions, you will be able to discuss the way and results of your work in-person and online with the participating teams and supporting experts. You will present your solutions during the final session (pitching).

The expert speakers during the second Active Citizens hackathon will be:

  1. Olga Napiontek and Agata Piotrkowska (Civis Polonus Foundation) – activities for and with young people;
  2. Emilia Kaczmarek (New Community Foundation), Zuzanna Karcz (OFF school Foundation), Dominik Kuc (GrowSpace Foundation), Kacper Nowicki (Varia Posnania Foundation) – activities for and with young people;
  3. Noemi Gryczko (learning experience designer, Information Society Development Foundation), Paulina Jędrzejewska (Culture Shock Foundation) and Joanna Szymańska (Information Society Development Foundation) – service design and communication.

How to apply?

It’s simple. Just fill in a short form: https://crm.frsi.org.pl/AO/hackathon_2. Describe the problem for which you want to look a solution during the hackathon, and then briefly justify why – in your opinion – it is worth dealing with it.

We will invite approximately 10 teams of three people to participate. Recruitment will be open until 12 March 11:59 p.m. CET. We will select the most interesting and well-described challenges, and will inform the selected teams of the results (on 18 March). We will provide and cover the costs of accommodation in Krakow (from 12 to 13 April) for those who will commute to Krakow (distance of 20 km from the city limits).
