In this project, we integrate Ukrainian school students into the local community and strengthen the social integration of residents in the Pomerania Province. The project addresses the problem of low intercultural awareness among Polish citizens, which results in stigmatisation of people coming from other countries. Our aim is to increase the intercultural awareness of children and young people and to develop common practices and recommendations for educators, both Ukrainian and Polish. We also activate Polish students and teachers to increase their empathy and awareness of the needs and problems of foreigners. We encourage them to avoid terms such as ‘migrant’ or ‘refugee’ – instead, we suggest getting to know each other, searching for each other’s strengths and building self-esteem. As part of the project, we run theatre workshops on intercultural communication for children and young people. We conduct a seminar for Polish and Ukrainian teachers on intercultural communication, create lesson scenarios and an e-guide on this subject. We offer a photo competition ‘Everyday life’ for children and young people from migrant and refugee families coming from Ukraine. An integration event, the Day of Ukrainian Culture, is also organised which includes handicraft workshops, documentary film screenings, a photo exhibition ‘Everyday Life’ and concerts by Ukrainian bands. The project’s main beneficiaries are schoolchildren and schoolteachers from Poland and Ukraine. The Day of Ukrainian Culture is an event for families with children, Ukrainian and Polish, and for all those interested in learning about other cultures. Our partners are: Caritas of the Archdiocese of Gdansk (in charge of recruiting people to participate in the workshops, as well as promoting and publicising the events) and the Emigration Museum in Gdynia (co-organising the photographic competition “Everyday Life” and the Day of Ukrainian Culture).
