Submit your team to participate in the third Active Citizens Fund – Regional Programme’s hackathon by 26 April, 15:00 CET. During the event, you will be working on the problem you would like to solve, receive the support from our experts and have the chance to win prizes worth up to PLN 10,000.
The third hackathon, named ‘We are here together’, will take place on 17-18 May in the City of Gdynia (Przystań Gdynia, Widna St. 2a). It will be dedicated to topics related to working with and for people with migration and refugee experience. We will address the challenges faced by your local community or organisation and look for solutions that support and engage migrants and refugees.
The IRSE Foundation – Institute for Social and Economic Balance is a content-related partner of the event.
Who are invited?
We are inviting people for whom the topic of migration and integration is important. If your organisation is already supporting migrants and refugees, this event is for you! If you just want to start working in this area – you are also welcome!!
Why a hackathon?
A hackathon is a special and very interesting meeting format. During the event, your time to work will be limited. You will have only (and as much as) 12 hours, but also the comfort of concentrating one hundred percent of your attention on finding solutions. Both of these features of the hackathon are good fuel for creativity.
The hackathon will be concluded with presentations of the solutions. The best ones will be selected by the votes of those attending and the experts advising you during the event. The selected solutions will be awarded (with three financial prizes of a total value of PLN 10,000).
Regardless of the prizes, each team will finish the hackathon with a ready-to-implement idea, which will be consulted with experts and participants.
Introductory meetings
Before the hackathon, we invite you to join two introductory webinars (open to all interested parties):
- 18.04.2024, 11:00-12:00 – Between Cultures. Strategies for building relationships with people with migration or refugee experience;
- 09.05.2024, 11:00-12:00 – Working in a multicultural team.
We also encourage you to watch the recordings of three webinars on service design methodologies and tools, which are available in our ‘Library‘. You will learn how to design services – proposals for activities that are attractive to the audience and that can become the basis for new projects. During the hackathon, you will put this knowledge into practice!
In addition, about a week before the hackathon, the teams selected to take part in the event will be invited to an hour-long organisational meeting, during which we will tell you how to prepare for the event in terms of content and logistics.
What will happen during the hackathon?
The hackathon will start on 17 May at noon and end on 18 May in the afternoon (around 17:00 CET). The event will consist of several parts. We will start by defining needs and value propositions so that you can generate ideas for solutions, knowing the perspective of your audience. A special session will be dedicated to preparing the presentation of the solution and presenting its main ideas.
Each part will be preceded by a short introduction and instructions. During and between the following sessions, you will be able to discuss the way and results of your work in-person and online with the participating teams and supporting experts. You will present your solutions during the final session (pitching).
The expert speakers at the third Active Citizens hackathon will be:
- Katarzyna Błasińska (IRSE Foundation), Martyna Bogaczyk (Education for Democracy Foundation), Piotr Malinowski (journalist and social activist), Nataliia Malyk (Support Centre for Immigrants), Elizabeth Peck (intercultural communication trainer) – working with and for people with migration and refugee experience;
- Noemi Gryczko (learning experience designer, Information Society Development Foundation), Paulina Jędrzejewska (Culture Shock Foundation) and Joanna Szymańska (Information Society Development Foundation) – service design and communication.
How to apply?
It’s simple. Just fill in a short form: https://crm.frsi.org.pl/AO/hackathon-3. Describe the problem for which you want to look a solution during the hackathon, and then briefly justify why – in your opinion – it is worth dealing with it.
We will invite approximately 10 teams of three people to participate. Recruitment will be open until 26 April 15:00 CET. We will select the most interesting and well-described challenges, and we will inform the selected teams of the results. We will provide and cover the costs of accommodation (from 17 to 18 May) for those who will commute to Gdynia (distance of 20 km from the city limits).
Accessibility
The building has lifts, there are no thresholds, the doors are wide and the ceilings are acoustic, meaning no reverberation is created. The walkway leading to the patio is sloped at an angle to allow wheelchairs to get around. There is an accessible toilet in the building.
